On April 3, the Panama Papers hit media outlets around the world, and the fallout was swift. A prime minister lost his job, and other global leaders are under mounting pressure to account for their actions. But the effects of the leaks are not evenly spread; the documents contained far more information about the offshore activities of individuals in the developing world than in the developed world. Whatever the reasons for the imbalance, it will likely limit the papers’ impact. In the developing world, long histories of corruption have dulled the public’s sensitivity to scandal, and repressive governments leave little room for popular backlash. Continue reading

U svojim prethodnim knjigama, Doktrina šoka: Uspon kapitalizma katastrofe (2007) i NO LOGO(2000), kanadska autorka i aktivistkinja Naomi Klajn bavila se temama kao što su neoliberalna „šok terapija“, konzumerizam, globalizacija i „kapitalizam katastrofe“, temeljno analizirajući sile koje stoje iza dramatičnog rasta ekonomske nejednakosti i ekološke degradacije tokom proteklih 50 godina.

Ali u svojoj novoj knjizi, Ovo menja sve: Kapitalizam protiv klime (izlazi iz štampe 16. septembra), Klajn skreće pažnju na budućnost, dokazujući da opasnost od klimatskih promena zahteva trenutnu radikalnu akciju kako bi se sprečila katastrofa. Klajn svakako nije jedina koja ukazuje na urgentnost pretnje, ali od ostalih je izdvaja argument da je kapitalizam – a ne ugljendioksid – u korenu klimatskih promena, i da nas žudnja za profitom neumoljivo vodi ka ekološkom armagedonu.

Turkey‘s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, appears to be backing away from a threatened “final” confrontation to clear thousands of protestersoccupying an Istanbul park, after a series of late night meetings with representatives of those involved in street protests that have engulfed dozens of Turkish cities.
